DOCTORS: WHY YOU SHOULD WALK AFTER DINNER

Ten minutes is all it takes.

Ten minutes. That is all it takes. A short walk after dinner can lower your blood sugar, help your digestion and improve your sleep, say doctors.

Research shows that people who stroll for 10 minutes after eating have smaller spikes in blood sugar than those who sit down straight away. It is thought the muscles use up glucose as you move.

Dr Helen Marsh, a GP in Manchester, said: “It does not need to be fast or far. A lap of the block or a trip to the postbox will do.”

My own experience backs this up. I have been doing it for six weeks and have lost half a stone, gained a dog-walking neighbour and learned that the man at number 14 owns an alarming number of gnomes.

Doctors suggest leaving the phone at home. If you do take it, it is better to look at the sky than the screen.
