Winter bills are coming and prices are not falling. If you have not looked at your energy deal for a year, you are probably paying more than you need to. Here are five ways to cut the cost.

1. Check your tariff end date

Most fixed deals last 12 or 24 months. When yours ends, you are moved onto a standard tariff, which is usually much dearer. Put the end date in your calendar and look at least a month ahead.

2. Read your meter, not just your bill

Estimated bills can leave you under- or over-paying for months. Send a meter reading to your supplier every month and your direct debit will reflect what you actually use.

3. Compare more than the headline price

A low unit rate can be wiped out by a high daily standing charge. Look at the total you would pay each year for your own usage, not the number on the front of the leaflet.

4. Ask about green and smart options

Some suppliers offer cheaper rates for off-peak electricity if you have a smart meter. If you can run the dishwasher after 10pm, you may save £100 or more over the winter.

5. Switch when it suits you

Switching takes about five working days and you will not lose supply. There is no need to wait until your contract ends if the exit fee is smaller than the saving.

Brightside Energy customers who move to a new fixed deal this month can get a £50 credit on their first bill. Terms and conditions apply. Prices correct at time of publication.
