It took a crane, a team of six and a farmer who has not slept properly since August. But Maurice Tindall’s pumpkin has finally hit the scales at 900kg.
The 64-year-old grew the monster, which is roughly the size of a small car, in a field behind his farm near Ormskirk. He fed it on seaweed, milk and, he says, “a lot of encouragement”.
It was weighed at the county show on Saturday, watched by a crowd of 300 and a very nervous judge. “The scales went round and round and I thought they would explode,” said Maurice.
It is not a record, but it is the biggest ever grown in the county. Maurice plans to carve it for Halloween. He has asked for volunteers with a chainsaw.
