A golf club in Surrey has banned trousers, ruling that members must wear shorts on the course from May to September.

The rule, passed by 61 votes to 58 at the annual meeting, has divided the 400-strong membership. Supporters call it “a victory for common sense and a cool breeze”. Opponents say it is “an attack on the dignity of the knee”.

Captain Alan Bickerstaff said: “It is a practical rule. Trousers get hot, they get wet and they get tangled in the clubs.”

Not everyone agrees. “I am 74,” said member Roy Eames. “Nobody wants to see my legs at 7am.” The club says any member who breaks the rule will be asked to buy a round.
