A finalist on a TV baking show has quit at the last minute after a row over a soggy bottom, with her fellow contestants left “in shock”.

Gill Standish, 52, told producers she could not carry on after a tart she describes as “perfect” was marked down by the judges. “It was not soggy,” she said. “It was moist, which is different.”

A spokesman for the show said: “We are sorry to see Gill leave and wish her all the best.” Judges say they stand by their verdict, which they reached “after tasting it twice”.

The final goes ahead on Sunday with two bakers instead of three. Gill says she will be watching at home, with a cup of tea and a very good tart.
