A grey parrot missing for nine days has been found perched on a railing in the public gallery of a magistrates’ court, where it is said to have startled two defendants and a clerk.
The bird, called Kevin, flew out of his owner’s kitchen window in Wigan and made his way across town to Courtroom 3. Court staff say he sat quietly through a drink-driving case before saying, loudly and clearly, “Not guilty”.
The magistrates were not amused. “It is a serious court,” said one usher. “But I will admit the defendant did look worried.”
Owner Pamela Hurst, 71, was reunited with Kevin in the car park. “He knows all the words from the telly,” she said. “I think he must have heard them on the news.” Kevin has been released without charge.
