Fans of Eastgate RFC burned their scarves in the car park on Saturday night after captain Tom Rudd signed for the club’s fiercest rivals, Westmere.

The 31-year-old prop, who has played 214 times for Eastgate, said he was leaving for “a new challenge”. He added that the new club’s changing rooms had “a very good shower”.

By Sunday morning supporters had bought replacement scarves from the club shop. “We will cheer for whoever is in the shirt,” said season ticket holder Ann Pyke. “But he had better not score against us.”
