Rob Hennessey has played cricket for 22 years and has never taken a catch like it. Diving to his left, with the ball already past him, he stuck out a glove and somehow made it stay.

The dismissal, in the third over of the county semi-final, sent the opposing batter back to the pavilion shaking his head. It also sparked a row that has now run for three days.

The umpires gave it out. The batter’s captain says the ball bounced. Replays are inconclusive, though Rob’s teammates say they have seen no evidence to suggest it did.

“I was told to catch it, so I did,” said Rob, 38. “If it bounced, it bounced very quickly.”
