AIRLINE SCRAPS HAND-LUGGAGE FEES

A budget airline has scrapped its charges for hand luggage, in a surprise reversal that will save families up to £60 on a return trip.

Passengers will be able to bring one small bag and one larger cabin bag, at no extra cost, on all flights from next month.

Why now?

The carrier said it had listened to customers and regulators. A spokesman said: “We know that fees for cabin bags are among the most unpopular parts of flying with us. We want to put that right.”

Industry analysts believe the airline was worried about losing customers to rivals. “It has been a long-running source of complaint,” said travel expert Neil Hatton. “This is a clever move, if a little late.”

The catch

There is, as ever, a catch. Fares will rise by an average of £8 each way, and there are strict limits on the size and weight of bags. A bag that does not fit the metal frame at the gate will be charged at the old rate.

Travellers should measure their bags before they fly. The new limit is 55cm by 40cm by 20cm and 10kg for the larger of the two bags.
