Flights, a hotel and a custard tart for less than £200? Yes, in Lisbon it can be done, if you are clever about when you go and where you stay.

Getting there

Return flights from several UK airports can be found from £60 if you travel midweek in the cooler months. Book a small cabin bag only and you can avoid hold-luggage fees.

Where to stay

Skip the big hotels and look at guesthouses in the Alfama and Graça districts. A clean double room with breakfast can cost as little as £45 a night.

What to eat

Pastéis de nata, the custard tarts, are around £1 each and best eaten warm. A plate of grilled sardines and a glass of house wine rarely tops £12.

What to do for free

Ride the number 28 tram, climb to a viewpoint at sunset and watch the city turn gold. Most of the best things in Lisbon cost nothing at all.

Budget breakdown

  • Flights: £60
  • Two nights’ accommodation: £90
  • Food and drink: £35
  • Transport: £10

That comes to £195, with a few pounds left for the tart.
