MPs will debate whether to scrap the twice-yearly clock change, as they have done every year for as long as anyone can remember.
A private member’s bill, to be heard on Friday, proposes staying on British Summer Time all year round. Supporters say it would save energy and give people lighter evenings.
Opponents warn that it would mean dark mornings in the north of Scotland. “Children would be walking to school in the pitch black,” said one MP.
The bill is not expected to pass. “We do this every year,” said a veteran backbencher. “Next year we will bring new batteries.”
